Veins are an essential part of the human circulatory system. The heart is where it all starts, pumping blood out to the body, but the veins ensure that the system runs smoothly by then taking that blood and pumping it back to the heart, engaging in a reciprocal relationship that keeps us and our bodies running smoothly.
Veins can vary greatly in size, but an obvious way to tell when a vein has become abnormal is when there is discoloration, swelling, cramping, itching and/or pain with sitting for extended periods of time. Vein abnormalities such as spider veins or varicose veins are actually a fairly common condition; however, they can make daily tasks difficult due to pain or feeling self-conscious.
Fortunately, both spider veins and varicose veins are extremely treatable. Options range from non-surgical to minimally invasive surgical procedures, depending on the treatment elected. For example, compression socks have been found to be useful in increasing circulation to the affected veins, and an increase in blood flow may lead to a decrease in vein irritation. Our Center offers compression stockings as a non-invasive treatment for varicose veins. For more serious or difficult cases of spider veins and varicose veins, please see our vein treatment option page.
