One of the keys to effectively managing your acne is understanding it, and while acne can and does vary from person to person, there are a few steps you can take to understanding acne in general so that you can better understand and seek out the treatment option that’s best for you.

Simply put, acne results when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria that live in our pores multiply under these circumstances, resulting in acne. Acne is also a catchall phrase for the many forms it can take. From relatively minor blackheads to hugely irritated red blemishes, the root cause ultimately rests with the condition of the skin, which is also affected by factors such as diet and stress. However, every body is different, and so what works for one person struggling with a particular type of acne may not work for another person—though they may be struggling with the exact same kind. Genes also impact the type of acne we have, and other external factors such as birth control can play a role as well.
