CoolSculpting
Traditionally, patients seeking a physical change in their body fat composition had to go under the knife to achieve significant fat reduction. In recent years, however, procedures such as CoolSculpting® have emerged as a viable and safe alternative to more drastic (and costly) surgical procedures.
CoolSculpting is currently the only FDA-approved, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate that stubborn fat that resists all additional efforts made via diet and exercise.
The science behind the treatment
Years ago, a curious effect was observed in children who ate popsicles: some got dimples in their cheeks. After further study, the Harvard scientists who observed this phenomenon were able to conclude that the appearance of dimples in the children could be attributed to the coldness from the popsicles—the icy treats were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells. From this discovery, cryolipolysis was born.
Cryolipolysis is the science behind CoolSculpting, the procedure that thousands of Americans have elected to have in the pursuit of feeling their most confident selves.
How it works
During a CoolSculpting procedure, a precisely controlled cooling is delivered to a targeted area, specifically aimed at affecting the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells freeze and then die, causing the body to process these cells as waste and eliminate them, creating a “sculpted” body effect in the aftermath. Because the procedure relies on the body’s natural function to remove dead cells, final results from the initial treatment only emerge weeks after the procedure. However, it is well worth the wait because once these fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good, making CoolSculpting a lasting and long-term solution.
Who is this procedure best for?
CoolSculpting is best for someone looking for mild improvements in a “trouble area” on their body. It is not a shortcut to losing massive amounts of weight or drastically altering body shape, but it can be considered the finishing touch to a weight-loss program or for an individual looking to slightly modify their body shape. Furthermore, the degree to which the body is “sculpted” depends on many factors, such as number of treatments received and individual body type—some people will lose more fat than others.
